Keira Christina Knightley is an English film and television actress. She began her career as a child actress, and came to international prominence in 2003, after co-starring in the films Bend It Like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Knightley has since become a notable lead actress, having appeared in several Hollywood films and earning an Academy Award nomination for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Early life

Knightley was born in Teddington, Middlesex, England to Sharman Macdonald, a Scottish actress turned award-winning playwright, and Will Knightley, an English theatre and television actor. She has an elder brother, Caleb who was born in 1979. Knightley lived most of her life in Richmond, attending Teddington School and Esher College. Knightley suffers from dyslexia, but nevertheless achieved good grades in school to please her parents, and was thus permitted to acquire a talent agent and pursue an acting career. Knightley has noted that she was "single-minded about acting" during her childhood. She performed in a number of local amateur productions including After Juliet (written by her mother) and United States (written by her then drama teacher, Ian McShane).

She has been described by press reports as "famously open with media", although Knightley herself has stated "I don't talk about my private life."

She was voted the sexiest movie star of all time by the readers of Empire magazine, was ranked #79 by FHM in the magazine’s UK Edition 2004 100 Sexiest Women in the World list, #18 in 2005, and was ranked the sexiest woman in the world in 2006. The U.S. Edition ranked her #54 in 2004, #11 in 2005 and #5 in 2006. Knightley appeared nude along with Scarlett Johansson, on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine's March 2006 'Hollywood' issue. In May 2006, Knightley was #9 on Maxim's 2006 Hot 100.

Knightley was the celebrity face for the luxury goods brand Asprey, as well as Lux haircare products in Japanese television commercials. In April 2006, she was confirmed as the new celebrity face of Chanel's perfume "Coco Mademoiselle", though the first photo from the campaign was not released until May 2007.

She is the subject of Glasgow band Endrick Brothers song "Star of the Silver Screen" featured on their forthcoming album Attraction versus Love. The song was written after a chance meeting at a party in Glasgow during the filming of The Jacket.

Her Valentino gown at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards won her much acclaim and even landed her the top spot on Steven Cojocaru's "Best Dressed List" on Entertainment Tonight, while the dress she wore to the 2006 Academy Awards was recently donated to the charity Oxfam, where it raised £4,300.

Personal life

Knightley, who currently lives in London, is dating her Pride and Prejudice co-star, Rupert Friend. She has previously dated Irish fashion model Jamie Dornan, as well as actor Del Synnott, who according to some reports, attempted suicide after their relationship ended, although Synnott and Knightley deny these claims. Knightley has stated that she feels uncomfortable dressing up and that she prefers British men over any other nationality, because she feels that British men are less concerned about their own appearance.

She has denied rumours she is anorexic, although she has noted that her family has a history of anorexia, after her appearance at the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest premiere led to media speculation that her extremely slender figure was due to an eating disorder. In July of 2006, Knightley noted that she believes that she has become a workaholic, detailing that "the last five years have blended into one. I can't tell you what was last year and what was the year before" and specifying that she is "working too much" and is "quite frightened that if I continue at this rate I will start to hate what I love." As a result, Knightley may take a one year break from acting to travel and focus on her personal life.

Knightley remains a devoted fan of West Ham United, having attended many games as a child.

Keira Knightley

From the moment she first graced our screens, it was clear that Keira Knightley was destined for stardom. Born on March 26, 1985, in the leafy London suburb of Teddington, this British beauty seemed to have showbiz in her DNA. It’s hardly a surprise, given her lineage; her father is the respected actor Will Knightley and her mother is the award-winning playwright Sharman Macdonald. While many starlets claw their way into the industry, Keira was practically born in the wings, absorbing the intoxicating world of theatre and film from her earliest days. This quintessential English Rose, however, quickly proved she was more than just a pretty face with a privileged background. She possessed a fierce determination and a captivating screen presence that would soon make her one of the most recognisable faces on the planet. Her journey wasn’t without its struggles, as she was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, but she bravely used her passion for acting as a tool to overcome it, striking a deal with her parents to study hard in exchange for her own agent.

It was a deal that paid off spectacularly. While her early career included a notable role as Sabé, Queen Amidala’s decoy in „Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace“, where her resemblance to Natalie Portman was so uncanny that even their own mothers reportedly couldn’t tell them apart on set, her true explosion onto the global stage came in 2002. The sleeper hit „Bend It Like Beckham“ showed off her girl-next-door charm and athletic prowess, making her a household name in the UK. But it was the following year, 2003, that truly cemented her status as Hollywood royalty. Her role as the feisty, corset-clad Elizabeth Swann in Disney’s blockbuster „Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl“ catapulted her to international superstardom. Suddenly, Keira Knightley was everywhere, her impossibly sharp cheekbones gracing magazine covers and movie posters across the globe. She even managed to squeeze in a memorable role in the holiday classic „Love Actually“ in the same year. To pursue this whirlwind career, she made the bold decision to leave her studies at Esher College, betting everything on her talent – a gamble that undeniably resulted in a royal flush.

But don’t you dare think she was content with just being a blockbuster queen. Keira quickly proved her acting chops were as sharp as her jawline, diving headfirst into critically acclaimed period dramas that would define a significant part of her career. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of „Pride & Prejudice“ earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, silencing any critics who may have dismissed her as mere blockbuster fodder. She continued to deliver powerful performances in films like „Atonement“ and „The Duchess“, becoming the go-to actress for any role requiring wit, vulnerability, and the ability to look absolutely stunning in a historical gown. While her professional life was soaring, she managed to keep her personal life refreshingly out of the spotlight. After a few high-profile relationships, she found lasting love with musician James Righton, the keyboardist for the band Klaxons. The pair married in a beautifully understated ceremony in France in 2013 and have since welcomed two daughters, Edie and Delilah, creating a quiet, private family life away from the Hollywood glare.

Today, Keira Knightley stands as a veteran of the industry she has dominated for over two decades. She is a woman who has gracefully navigated the treacherous waters of child stardom, intense media scrutiny, and the pressures of being a global icon. She’s no longer just the swashbuckling heroine or the romantic lead; she has evolved into a formidable and respected actress who is unafraid to speak her mind. She has become a powerful voice for feminism within the industry, openly discussing the objectification of women and challenging the so-called „male gaze“ by taking on complex, female-centric roles and being selective about scenes involving nudity. From a determined, dyslexic child in Teddington to an Oscar-nominated powerhouse and a dedicated mother, Keira’s story is one of talent, tenacity, and timeless elegance. She remains a captivating enigma – a global superstar who values her privacy, a period-drama queen with a modern, rebellious spirit, and a true British treasure.
